Your fencing journey begins here…

To become a fencer at SMF:

  • Enroll in an Introduction to Fencing Class (8 weeks, 1 class/wk, 1 hour/class)

  • Sign the annual emergency contact and waiver form

  • Show up and participate in your class to learn the fundamentals of fencing

Upon completion of the introductory class you will have a good sense of what fencing is about. Our goal is that you enjoyed the class and can’t wait to get more fencing in your life. If we were successful in achieving this goal, the next steps in your fencing journey are as follows:

  • Complete the annual waiver form

    • Pay the annual club dues

    • Join USA Fencing

  • Sign up for another class

    • At this point, you are welcome to begin exploring the different weapons (foil, epee, or saber), but we ask that you stick with one weapon for a minimum of 3 months before switching or adding an additional one

  • Attend open fencing to practice the techniques taught in your classes in less structured circumstances and against a greater variety of opponents

    • Upon completing the Introduction to Fencing class, your class tuition entitles you to attend all Open Fencing opportunities in the schedule

  • Begin purchasing your own fencing equipment

    • Talk to your coaches, we can help you make the most appropriate equipment selections

You are the master of your own journey; attend only classes for the social interaction or show up at the club every night in preparation to compete. The coaches at SMF are happy to work with all of our students as you develop into the absolute best fencer that you can be. Regardless of your personal motivation, recreational for fitness to nationally competitive, we’ll do our best to help you achieve your goals.
